What does it mean to be finally free? There is no better person to ask than Vanity Fair July 2015 cover star Caitlyn Jenner. After decades of life as Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner, she has never been happier since having revealed her true self. ¡°[The best thing is] for people to realize that to be able to live your life authentically is the most wonderful gift you can give yourself,¡± she says. And it is that very gift of freedom that she wants others like herself to experience.
Jenner, who is aware of her privilege (given her immense celebrity status, she calls herself the ¡°the exception to the rule¡±), is using her platform to bring awareness and aid to the too-often-ignored struggles of the transgender community by partnering with mega¨Cbeauty brand MAC Cosmetics. She has created a limited-edition lipstick appropriately named Finally Free, a rosy-nude shade that compliments most skin tones and is appropriate for everyday wear, something Jenner was business-savvy about when opting for a nice neutral over a bold color. ¡°I want people to use it every day so they have to buy more,¡± she says. ¡°I want to raise a lot of money.¡±
One-hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the MAC AIDS Fund Transgender Initiative, which will support organizations and programs dedicated to improving transgender lives. Just take a look at these statistics: The National Center for Transgender Equality reports that 1 in 5 transgender people in the U.S. has been discriminated against when looking for housing, and more than 1 in 10 have been evicted from their homes because of their gender identity. According to a survey done by the National Transgender Discrimination Survey in 2014, 41 percent of participants who have experienced rejection by family and friends, discrimination, victimization, or violence have attempted suicide. The Human Rights Campaign reports that there were 21 transgender victims of homicides in 2015¡ªmore than in any previous year. And the list goes on. The best way, Jenner found, to solve these problems is money. ¡°It comes down to finances,¡± she says. ¡°If they had more resources¡ªand it doesn¡¯t take a tremendous amount of money¡ªthey could do so much more work.¡±
If you want to do your part and be a part of this conversation, this very meaningful lipstick, Finally Free, launches April 7, exclusively on maccosmetics.com. As Jenner puts it, there is no better feeling than being yourself. ¡°It¡¯s incredible to be able to be in a position in life where you can say, ¡®This is me. This is who I am, and I live it authentically every day.¡® It¡¯s the most wonderful feeling in the world.¡±
